Assistant Professor of African American Literature

The Department of English at Northwestern University invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant professor position in African American literature, to begin Fall 2019. The applicant’s research may emphasize any historical period and any literary mode (including but not limited to fiction, poetry, or drama). Candidates whose projects forge generative links across periods or genres are warmly encouraged. Ideally, the candidate’s engagement with African American cultural production will complement our existing strengths in U.S. ethnic literatures. Investments in transatlantic or diasporic studies, environmental humanities, or the global circulation of literary texts are also especially welcome.

For the initial application, please submit the following:

Instructions for Dissertation Abstract: Please limit your abstract to two pages, and upload it on the following page under the field that says "Research Statement." Despite the language of the form, we do want an abstract of your dissertation project rather than an overview of your research agenda, broader details of which can be indicated in your cover letter.

Instructions for Letters of Recommendation: If you supply the individual e-mail addresses of your recommenders, they will be prompted directly to upload a letter into our system. If you are using letters filed through Interfolio, please supply instead the Interfolio-generated e-mail address for each recommender that will prompt that system to send us the relevant letter.

Application materials are due by October 21, 2018.
