Cross-Genre Writing Minor

Requirements for the Cross-Genre Minor in Creative Writing

The Cross-Genre Minor in Writing is not application based. Students may declare the minor when they have taken the two introductory courses required, and one course from the core course menu.

7 Courses, as follows

(No creative writing course may be taken pass/fail or audited)

Two Introductory Courses* 
  • 206 Reading & Writing Poetry**
                   AND 
  • 207 Reading & Writing Fiction (pre-requisite: 206)
                    OR 
  • 208 Reading & Writing Creative Nonfiction (pre-requisite: 206)
Two Core Courses in the same genre from the following***
  • Poetry: English 306 or substitute Writing 302
  • Fiction: English 307 or substitute Writing 301
  • Creative Nonfiction: English 308 or substitute Writing 303
One Course in a different genre from the following*** 
  • Poetry: English 306 or substitute Writing 302
  • Fiction: English 307 or substitute Writing 301
  • Creative Nonfiction: English 308 or substitute Writing 303
  • Cross-Genre: English 307
Two 300-level literature classes****
(from English Department offerings ONLY):
  • 1 on material written prior to 1830
  • 1 on material written after 1830
Notes:
* The School for Continuing Studies also offer courses under English 206, 207, and 208. These courses do not count toward the Cross-Genre Minor in Creative Writing.
** Freshmen may not enroll in this class until their first spring quarter.  Seniors may not enroll until add/drop week.
*** Courses run by the Center for the Writing Arts (Writing 301, 302, 303) are by application only.  Check their website for application deadlines and courses offered.
**** Students who have completed both sections of either American Literary Traditions (270-1,2) or British Literary Traditions (210-1,2) can use these two courses to count as ONE of these six literature courses.
