Meghan Costa Visiting Assistant Professor

Meghan Daly Costa (Ph.D. Northwestern University) specializes in Renaissance literature and culture, early modern race studies, the history of science, and racial and gender cross-dressing on the Renaissance stage. Her research and teaching have been recognized with the Virgil B. Heltzel Fellowship, the Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities Graduate Affiliateship, and the Northwestern English Department Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award.

Her current project, "Early Modern Knowledge Problems: Race and Epistemology in the Seventeenth-Century English Imagination," examines how early modern writers mobilize race as a vehicle for investigating far-reaching epistemological questions about the limits and parameters of human knowledge. I argue that race emerges as a valuable and distinct tool for addressing the different kinds of knowledge problems--such as debates about universal norms and the organization of knowledge into discrete disciplines--that develop out of England’s participation in a transcultural, global network.
