Alfred Appel, Jr., (Ph.D. Columbia) is the editor of The Annotated Lolita (rev. ed. 1991) and author of Nabokov's Dark Cinema (1974). He has also authored Signs of Life (1983), a work on American photography and popular culture of the past five decades, The Art of Celebration: The Expression of Joy in 20th Century Art, Literature, Photography and Music (Knopf, 1992), and Jazz Modernism: From Ellington and Armstrong to Matisse and Joyce.
