Katy Chiles teaches and writes about early American literature and culture,
African-American and Native American literature, and critical race theory.
Her current research focuses on how late eighteenth-century beliefs about
the mutability of the racialized body structures the way that early American
literary texts characterize racial difference. Her essay on Samson Occom
and Phillis Wheatley is forthcoming in PMLA. Her work has also appeared in
or is forthcoming in American Literature and Nineteenth-Century Theatre and
Film.
