Ashes Taken for Fire:
Aesthetic Modernism and the Critique of Identity (University of Minnesota Press, 2007), pursues the philosophical question of non-identity in the prose fiction of such writers as Joseph Conrad, Nathanael West and Ralph Ellison among others. He has published essays on Conrad and Ellison, as well as on Katherine Mansfield and Chester Himes. At present, he is finishing work upon a second book project entitled Panegyric Exposures: Black Fragments in Explorative Music, Literature and Film.
